By definition, CHRONO TRIGGER is a role-playing game that incorporates turn-based fighting. However, describing it with words proves difficult due to its unusual nature. From a conceptual standpoint, the battle system in Chrono Trigger is called dynamic combat. It's not that accurate, though. Classic turn-based role-playing games like Final Fantasy feature two rows of monsters and heroes standing still before each turn. Behind the first row of heroes is a tank, and a magic or healing mage in front. Both the characters in CHRONO TRIGGER always change locations without first establishing lines or positions. Randomly positioned characters or monsters require you to strategize in how they should be fought. The first retro JRPG I played featured situations where a character was surrounded by multiple monsters and had to fend off a fierce beast. Exploiting each character's strengths is critical when unpredictable battle conditions change. For example, when surrounded by enemies, any characters with long-range abilities must choose a distant enemy to attack. Doing this will allow them to use their power outside of melee range and reduce the chances of being killed before a nearby ally can help. Extremely difficult circumstances encourage extraordinary team spirit. Some heroic acts require participants to close together to achieve maximum effectiveness. Doing so also inflicts massive damage on the target. Because this attack's cooldown period lasts a long time, everyone needs to wait before aiming correctly. Incorrect aiming results in defeat. No matter what you say, one fact is indisputable: Playing this game requires suffering, strategy and fortitude. Otherwise, you will never triumph.

Every character in the CHRONO TRIGGER movie has a special attack TECH. As their TECH points increase, so do their special attacks. Combining TECH with other TECH creates a more powerful stage that constantly changes and grows. This technique can also be used to form TRIPLE or DOUBLE TECH. These techniques can maintain balance and function indefinitely as long as the team stays together. This necklace holds incredible power as a symbol of CHRONO TRIGGER. By wearing it, players permanently alter the typical RPG format into a more turn-based system. New Game+ is a spiritual dish that pushed CHRONO TRIGGER ahead of its competitors when it came to re-imaging older games. It's the result of some big unanswered secret, a missing component or an especially powerful monster. Playing the game can cause a deep sense of poetry or mystery. It's also possible to chew on these feelings by skipping certain scenes. Furthermore, it's possible to play just superfically by skipping other scenes. The second dish served up to the player by CHRONO TRIGGER is called “Moral.” It’s not quite a game with a clear ending where the player can choose any direction; it’s more of a linear story that follows its course through time. Because the game's timeline is the focus instead of just a side element like many other time-space traveling games do. Every decision causes different outcomes, fates and consequences for everyone involved.

Due to the nature of this game's story elements, I recommend playing it only when mentally prepared to handle the plot's shocks. The story starts at a Fair in 1000 A.D. There, Crono fell in love with Marle, a beautiful girl he met at a friends house. They went to see the teleporting machine at the house of another friend, Lucca. Marles necklace glowed and pulled her into the temporal portal at a moment's notice. While jumping alongside her, Crono and Marle were propelled into a bizarre new dimension. Marle is the descendant of the castle's queen. People believed that Leena, previously thought to be Queen, went missing and was then brought back to the castle. Lucca's information paradoxically necessitated his and Marle's collaboration to locate the actual Queen Leena in the past. Because of this, the two would have to work together to develop a timeline where Marle wouldn't exist if they chose to explore alternative timelines in the past. After crossing into 12,000 BC, the group dove into the ice age. Their first major struggle was then crossing back into recorded history. The second major plot point involved learning of the monster, Lavos, that destroyed the planet years ago. This revelation caused a dramatic shift in the plot; it quickly became a hurricane of twists and turns. However, proper attention to dialogue and cutscenes can always restore anyone to their bearings.

The story revolves around teenage heroes. They are: Crono courageously explores the world around him for answers. He is the inspiration for all future adventures, as he uses a Katana sword and magical powers to produce light and thunder. Cronos grew up close to Lucca, a childhood friend who loves machinery. Lucca is informed on many topics and is highly perceptive. She possesses fire magic. Marle, the princess of ice and emotion, is mischievous but also emotionally sensitive. She has feelings for Crono. The best swordsman in the Middle Ages, Frog, is also self-deprecating. He was cursed to turn into a frog due to committing a sin against the church. However, he possesses water magic and can wield the Masamune sword that can subjugate demons. In the year 2300, a group found a robot named Robo. He doesn’t have any magic, but he has an extremely high laser combat ability. The poetry of the story in CHRONO TRIGGER brings many different emotions thanks to the cause and effect timeline. For example, if both of them told the truth, there wouldn't be hostility caused by misunderstandings.
