Imagine living in a country invaded by foreign forces and seeing the state fall into chaos. After that, it dawns on us that freedom is a luxury many people can't afford to enjoy. That's only a fiction, but the threat of becoming a victim of that nightmare doesn't seem so implausible when we consider the prevalence of these events in real life. When faced with a difficult situation, we can resolve our problems by playing Beholder. By opening a country's context to the general public, Beholder highlights the darkness and injustice inside the country. The leadership and management classes of that country use force and any other tricks to stifle safety and freedom for all citizens. Anyone demonstrating aggressive or subversive thoughts will be arrested and kept in prison indefinitely. Or they might be subjected to other forms of harsh punishment that are never explained or identified. No one knows the fate of anyone arrested, whether they're still alive or dead. This nation of darkness is the only country on earth where everything you do and say is recorded and scrutinized. Vanishing as though he never existed, this place of confinement contains no liberty.

The government mandates compliance with their coercive and autocratic rule through the use of henchmen. However, they lack the manpower to properly monitor the people in a given area. As a result, they choose to secretly deploy henchmen all over a region. The previous apartment resident was erased because of his strong opposition to the government. Everyone understands that you are the chosen replacement of this role. In order to succeed, you must monitor, listen, observe and trap all the inhabitants in the apartment building. Any suspicious activities are to be reported to authorities immediately. Carl’s primary responsibility as the building manager is to constantly observe, identify strange behaviors, and decide whether to report to his boss. He additionally must constantly perform challenging mental tasks that the game provides. Specifically, because he represents a building manager in a game, he must obtain personal information about each person's background, identity, interests, aspirations and thoughts that they want to keep private. After obtaining this data, Carl must ask difficult questions to get more information. Carl must become a true employee in order to earn a paycheck. Obtaining employment requires gathering information, studying books and documents, and watching people. Some methods of obtaining this information are surreptitiously or openly performed without the subjects' consent. For good credibility as a dog handler, Carl must be discreet or even secretive when performing this investigative work. In the game, you’ll sit in an office and fulfill tasks assigned to you by your superiors. You’ll also monitor the activities of the residents of an apartment complex, such as collecting information about their thoughts on the current situation and buying devices that allow you to track them. After that, you need to find all information, documents and images related to tracking down people’s foils for a given task. Carl didn’t have a lot of money, and he struggled to support his family because of it. Even with a small salary, he had to consider a wide range of factors when deciding how to use his money. These included morality, conscience and family responsibilities as well as material needs like food and housing. Adding these considerations will help you determine which course of action to take. Consider purchasing a hearty family meal for the weekend or purchasing a tracking device with your funds. Additionally, consider hosting a small party to gather information from nearby tenants and then using the money to purchase a tracking device. Clever decision-making is imperative when considering how to handle unethical tasks. This is because it keeps your actions non-compliant while also not slowing down the progress of your superiors. Doing so will cause significant loss of life and security.

You live in a state of perpetual conflict between your love for the mystical and your desire for rationality, as well as the duty you feel to your fellow man vs. your desire to be free. Because you understand that there are repercussions to your actions, you know that there is only one option: to obey the orders of your superiors. You can feel their desperation when you look into the souls of those in need. This is a game of life, where choosing one path over another leads to vastly different futures. Most of these alternate realities aren't very bright. By working for the government, it’s understood that the future wouldn’t be pleasant. It's hard to declare a victor in this game, as both sides could lose. Carl could end up in prison for embezzlement, failing to carry out his duties or even being beaten by the police. It's important to be comfortable with your conscience; Carl should work to achieve that state.

The Beholder game's atmosphere is dark and hardcore. Discarded corpses with blackened eyes wander the game's desolate roads and walls. Also, the game features gloomy tones in its art— along with sad roadways and a sense of sorrow in its music. The pensive squeak and dreary rumble accompanies these images. Just observing the photographs and hearing their sound suffices to conjure the sorrow of those involved. The color spectrum consists of black, white and gray. In an average spy photograph, a person's face cannot be seen due to the shadows cast by their blackened eyes and wide open mouth. Furthermore, it is impossible to see the edges of a person's lips or nose. Anyone can be an undercover government informant or bounty hunter. Because you need to inherently distrust everyone and everything, every progression occurs in sequential order. My claustrophobia is exacerbated when I'm confronted with images and eyes that confront me. Don't skip part 2 of Beholder, titled "Obsessed."
